The GWO Basic Technical Training (or GWO BTT) is among the program of GWO’s courses, designed for providing learners with the skills and knowledge needed to work on technical issues both on and offshore, especially in the wind turbine industry. Together with VIVABLAST, let’s find out more about the course’s content and its certificate, all in the article below!

  • Course objective

The wind turbine industry has a lot to offer, especially when the number of well-trained GWO engineers and technicians is in high demand for the next couple of years. In order to perform the work efficiently and safely in this industry, it is crucial to have solid technical knowledge. For this purpose, GWO Basic Technical Training has been designed to provide learners with the understanding and proper skills for this line of work. GWO (or Global Wind Organization) is a well-known organization specializing in providing training courses to engineers working in wind turbine energy with the ultimate aim to ensure a safe working environment as well as a capable workforce according to international standards. In addition, the GWO Basic Technical Training will be focused mainly on 3 principal modules, namely:

  1. Mechanical
  2. Electrical
  3. Hydraulic

The course curriculum is estimated to take up to 4.5 days to complete, with 2 days of learning Mechanicals, 1.3 days of Electrical, and lastly 1.2 days for Hydraulics. The modules are tailored according to the GWO taxonomy: Knowledge – Skills – Ability.Furthermore, this course is not only for people who are still new to the industry but also for those who have already been experienced and wish to upskill their knowledge of wind turbine engines and equipment applications.GWO-BTT

1. GWO BTT Mechanical

Mechanical is one of the three modules being taught in GWO Basic Technical Training and is estimated to take up to 2 days to finish learning. This training focuses mainly on how to solve basic mechanical tasks responsibly under the supervision of an experienced technician, following safe working procedures and the correct PPE (Personal protective equipment). The module includes a total of 10 lessons delivered, such as:

  1. Introduction to the training (Safety instructions and emergency procedures, Facilities, Human factors, etc.)
  2. Mechanical introduction (Mechanical introduction, Main mechanical systems, How a turbine works, etc)
  3. The principles of bolted and welded connections
  4. Use of manual tightening and measuring tools
  5. Hydraulic Torque and Tension
  6. Gearbox
  7. Braking system
  8. Yaw system
  9. Cooling system

Upon completing this module, participants will have a solid knowledge of mechanical’s fundamentals (i.e theory, components, functions) and the ability to carry out any inspection if needed (i.e Inspection of the Cooling system).

2. GWO BTT Electrical

Electrical is the second out of the three modules in GWO Basic Technical Training being taught and is estimated to take up to 1.3 days to finish learning. This training focuses mainly on how to solve basic electrical tasks responsibly under the supervision of an experienced technician, following safe working procedures and the correct PPE (Personal protective equipment). The module includes a total of 6 lessons delivered, such as

  1. Introduction to the training (Safety instructions and emergency procedures, Facilities, Human factors, etc.)
  2. Introduction to electricity (Direct current, Ohm’s Law, Alternating current/direct current, etc)
  3. Electrical components (Batteries, Switches, Generators and motors, etc)
  4. Sensors (Wind – Temperature – Position sensors, etc)
  5. Electrical circuits (Symbols and diagrams, Assembly of an electrical circuit)
  6. Electrical measuring instruments (Measuring points – Symbols, Settings, etc)

Upon completing this module, engineers will have a solid knowledge of electrical’s fundamentals (i.e theory, components, symbols, functions) and the ability to carry out any electrical measurements if needed.

3. GWO BTT Hydraulic

Hydraulic is the last module in GWO Basic Technical Training and is estimated to take up to 1.2 days to finish learning. This training focuses mainly on how to solve basic hydraulic tasks responsibly under the supervision of an experienced technician, following safe working procedures and the correct PPE (Personal protective equipment). The module includes a total of 11 lessons delivered, such as:

  1. Introduction to the training (Safety instructions and emergency procedures, Facilities, Human factors, etc.)
  2. Hydraulic introduction (The hydraulic system, Pascal’s Law)
  3. Pumps
  4. Actuators
  5. Valves (Directional control valves and different types of valves)
  6. Accumulators
  7. Sensors (Pressure sensors)
  8. Pipes, hoses, and connections (Oil transfer, Hydraulic connections)
  9. Oil and filters (Collecting an oil sample, Checking oil levels, Filters, etc)
  10. Hydraulic diagrams (Symbols and diagrams, Identifying measuring points)
  11. Pressure measuring tools (Pressure gauge/manometer, Pressure measuring)

Upon completing this module, learners will have a solid knowledge of hydraulic’s fundamentals (i.e theory, components, symbols, functions), how to use hydraulic tools properly, and perform pressure measurements if needed.

Conclusion

With the help of GWO Basic Technical Training, all engineers and technicians are expected to be qualified and capable of performing the work safely and effectively, both on and offshore. This course is designed to equip participants with relevant skills and knowledge needed for mechanical, electrical, and even hydraulic technical tasks. All are delivered based on international standards, along with reliable equipment as well as learning facilities. For the GWO Basic Technical Training (GWO BTT), the certificate will have no expiration date and you can optimize utilizing it as long as you are still working within the industry.
