For all the people working in industries, typically in wind turbines, GWO Training is what you must undertake in order to not only ensure your safety but also perform the work effectively and productively, both onshore and offshore. If you are still new to everything that is GWO-related, let’s dive into this article with Vivablast’s team!

What is a GWO Training?

First of all, the word GWO actually stands for “The Global Wind Organization”, a non-profit organization of manufacturers and wind turbine owners that strive for a better working environment that is productive and injury-free thanks to adequate training in safety and emergency procedures.In Vietnam, GWO Training is officially held by VIVABLAST with guidance and support from experienced trainers. Vivablast established the training center in 2020 in accordance with Global Wind Academy from Denmark with an approved facility for training, certified protective gear, and reliable tools to prepare you for the best training experience ever. This training is often taken to prepare you with useful knowledge for reducing the risk associated with safety hazards that might occur while working in the wind turbine industry. Here at VIVABLAST, we offer three main training courses from entry-level to advanced, which are commonly known as:

GWO Basic Safety Training (GWO BST)

GWO Training and all you need to knowThe GWO BST ( Basic Safety Training) is a GWO standard safety and risk awareness training course dedicated to employees working in the wind industry. The GWO BST equips participants with the acquisition of the basic knowledge and skills needed to work in the Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) environment.The ultimate purpose of this GWO BST Module is to enable people to manage safely and efficiently in WTG industrial environments, following the GWO international standards through parallelly theoretical and practical courses.

GWO Basic Technical Training (GWO BTT)

The GWO BTT is a standardized training course for engineering work in a Wind Farm. This is an entry-level course that does not require previous experience in hydraulic, mechanical, or electrical. Not only that, those who have basic experience in those fields can update and improve their knowledge, especially since this course is dedicated to the Wind Industry.All the courses involved will be taught with practical and theoretical training in order to provide you with useful knowledge and also the practice you need for work requiring experience.

GWO Advanced Rescue Training (GWO ART)

As the name has suggested, this course is more suitable for individuals that are working in the wind industry (or any field related) and are chosen by their company to perform (or lead) an advanced rescue operation. This course is divided into 4 modules, namely:

  • ART Hub
  • ART Nacelle
  • Singleton ART Hub
  • Singleton ART Nacelle

To participate, engineers must acquire a GWO BST certificate in advance and the course is estimated to take 3 days. Upon completing the course, participants are expected to perform rescue operations using standard rescue equipment, methods, and techniques.

Course Content

In order to start your career path, the basic and mandatory requirement is that you must get a GWO Training certificate, which includes 5 modules as follow:

GWO First aid (GWO – FA)

The main focus of this subject is to prepare you for the background knowledge to carry out first-aid duties as well as how to use the life-saving kit. Furthermore, you will learn how to request help from telemedical consultation or rescue assistance with the ability to do an ABC (Airway, Breathing, and Circulation) survey on the patient and provide a concise and relevant report of the casualty’s condition. The ultimate goal is to prevent further injuries, whether it is minor or serious until the casualty can be handed over to the next level of care.

GWO Working at height (GWO – WH)

In addition to the common procedures for rescue and evacuation from high-altitude workplaces, the participants are trained on the use of common rescue and descender devices. Differences in equipment are explained comprehensively to the participants, as well as the proper rescue and recovery of casualties. For this BST Working at heights module, the participant must be physically and medically fit to participate as the fall arrest systems can only handle a maximum of 136 to 140 kg.

GWO Manual Handling (GWO – MH)

Through comprehensive training, this course will provide learners with an awareness of positive manual handling behavior in a safe manner in the wind industry. This includes:

  • Overview of relevant legislation, standards & guidance
  • Outline of manual handling
  • Incident and injury reporting associated with manual handling
  • Equipment pre and post-use checks, including certification of equipment

GWO Sea survival (GWO – SS)

This module is very crucial, especially for those who are going to work offshore. With survival training, Trainees will learn survival techniques and methods of safe transfer between vessels and installations. In addition, participants will acquire the ability to act safely and responsibly on encountering any risks and hazards on the sea. This may include: how to release and inflate the life raft, the exercise of donning the sling while the course participants are in the water during a helicopter rescue simulation, and the practice of safe transfer between ladder and boat and vice versa. GWO Fire Awareness (GWO – FAW)

For this last module, participants will learn how to:

  • Identifying any signs of fire
  • Follow emergency escape procedures
  • Follow the correct procedures and operations for fire extinguishing with firefighting equipment

The training course is to give delegates the skills and knowledge needed to prevent fires. You will practice in a realistic environment, including ‘live’ fire training using a range of first aid fire appliances (FAFA) to combat fire and evacuate to a safe environment.

What will you receive upon finishing the GWO training?

Upon finishing the courses, you will be receiving a certificate to start your journey in the wind industry. For the GWO Basic Safety Training (GWO BST), the certificate will be valid for 24 months so prior to the expiration date, all delegates must undertake the course once again to remain certified. For the GWO Basic Technical Training (GWO BTT), the certificate will have no expiration date.If you are looking for any GWO training center in Ho Chi Minh, VIVABLAST is the place you should be heading to!
